The Ups and Downs of the New School Lunch

Many of us have memories from being in the school cafeteria. There were friendships formed from being at the same table, feelings of nervousness on the first day, and swaps of sandwiches for cookies between lunchboxes. For those of us who ate school lunches, however, we probably remember the joys of pizza day as much as we remember the woes of mystery meat in the meatloaf Monday menu. While the menus for school lunches were always interesting, they may not have always been healthy for children. Recent changes in the law have required that school lunches become healthy so they do not encourage the problem of childhood obesity, but the law can’t require kids to eat them.
